Curtis Kinnard Hairston was born on 10 October 1961. Duriong his freshman year at WSSU, he won the Mr. Ram contest. As a result he got a record deal and became a professional vocalist. He recorded for Pretty Pearl Productions, Atlantic Records and the BB&Q Label. Hairston's talent was also noticed by Luther Vandross, who sang background vocals on his first album. Hairston's health deteriorated in 1995 and he returned home from New York, where he had lived during his musical career. Curtis Hairston died of kidney failure on 18 January 1996 at the North-Carolina Baptist Hospital.
