Howard Hewett was born on 1 October 1955 in Akron, Ohio. He moved to Los Angeles and danced on Soul Train. In 1979, he joined Shalamar with Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley. Shalamar had several big hits before Hewett launched his solo career in 1985. He signed with Elektra and his second single, "I'm for real", reached no. 2 on the Billboard r&b charts 1986. The follow-up single, "Stay", also made the Top 10, while "I commit to love" reached no. 12 in 1987. Howard Hewett married to Nia peeples, but the marriage only lasted four years. Hewett remained on Elektra through the 1980's and the early 1990's. During that time, he seldom found material worthy of his tremendous skills, but in 1988 he scored another hit with "Strange Relationship". He also sang duets with Dionne Warwick and Anita Baker.

Howard Hewett has also written numerous songs and he was a popular producer and session vocalist. Hewett co-wrote and produced "Frustration" for LaToya Jackson in 1984 and sang on her album "Heart don't lie". He did lead vocals on albums by Stanley Clarke and George Duke in 1984 and 1986 and sang with Firefox in 1986. He also did backgrounds on a Donna Summer release. In 1994, Hewett switched from Elektra to Expansion and released "It's time". The official website is at www.howardhewett.com.
