Jeff Lorber was born in Philadelphia on 4 November 1952. He started playing the piano at the age of four and later performed with a variety of local r&b bands. Lorber's infatuation with jazz began during his stay at the Berklee College of Music. He formed his band Jeff Lorber Fusion there. During the first half of the 1980's, he became became one of the most popular jazz acts of the period. His smooth sound brought together elements of funk, r&b, rock and electric jazz. He played keyboard and helped pioneer a genre of fusion later formatted using such names as NAC and Contemporary Jazz. In 1985 he released 'Step by step', which became his most successful album. When Fusion was at its most popular, Lorber disbanded his group and turned to production and session work. He worked with people like Karyn White, Audrey Wheeler and Evan Rogers. The Jeff Lorber website is at www.lorber.com.
