Keith Crier was born in Harlem, New York, in 1961. When he graduated he became a brokerage assistent on Wall Street, but he decided he actually wanted a career in music. He released his first record in 1985, using the name Keith Sweat. The track was called "My mind is made up", but it failed commercially. At the end of 1987, Keith tried again with the album "Make it last forever", which was an instant success, as it sold three million copies. The album featured the hits "I want her", "Something just ain't right", "Don't stop your love" and "Make it last forever" with Jacci McGhee. "I want her" was the groundbreaking single that ushered in the genre of new jack swing, which is a hybrid of traditional soul melodies with hip-hop's harder edge. In June 1990, Keith released his second album entitled "I'll give all my love to you". It was another succes and sold over a million copies. The singles "Make you sweat" and "I'll give all my love to you" were pulled from that album. Keith Sweat's third album was "Keep it comin'", which was a Billboard r&b chart-topper at the end of 1991. Its title track reached no. 1 in the r&b charts too. In 1994, Keith returned with "Get up on it", while a self-titled release followed in 1996 and a best of entitled "Just a touch" in 1997. Two years after that, Keith Sweat issued "Still in the game". Sweat has consistently made R&B and crossover hits by communicating masculine, adult emotions inside a comfort zone neither supersensitive nor super-macho. Keith's voice recalls that of 1970's singer Steve Arrington.
