Marva Hicks was born in Petersburg, Virginia, U.S.A. She started her early career as a gospel singer. After taking a trip to New York, Hicks was attracted to theatre and later took acting classes in Washington, D.C., where she joined the Eighties-Ladies in 1981. After the band split, she recorded several demos and got a record deal with Infinity records. In 1981, Marva released the single 'Looking over my shoulder', but the label folded and she ended up singing in Lena Horne's Broadway show for nearly three years. During a London tour, she met Stevie Wonder and began touring with him in the mid-1980's. Marva also did background vocals on his album 'Characters'. She signed with Polydor in the late 1980's and released her debut album in 1991. The album was called 'Marva Hicks' and included 'I got you where i want' and 'Never been in love before'.
