s.o.s.band

The Sounds Of Santa Monica was formed in Atlanta, Georgia and the original members were Mary Davis, Jason Bryant, Abdul Raoof and Billy Ellis. They performed regularly at Lamar's Regal Room in Atlanta, where they were discovered by the club's owner Milton Lamar, who would later become their manager. The band got a record deal with the independent Tabu label and soon three new members were added; Willie Killebrew, John Simpson and Bruno Speight. The band's name was changed to S.O.S. Band. They performed in funk style, which was very popular at the time. Soon, the S.O.S. Band would have numerous hits in the US during the 1980's. They were regularly on the Billboard r&b charts through 1987 and returned to the Top 10 four more times after that. Five of their albums also entered the charts in the US. There were several personnel changes throughout the 1980's. Vocalist Davis left the S.O.S. Band to persue a solo career in 1987. One of the two singers that replaced her was Fredi Grace, from Fredi Grace and Rhinestone. Mary Davis and Abdul Raoof appeared as the S.O.S. Band on a UWF Allstar concert in 2000.
