In the 1960's, when Vesta Williams was still an infant, her family moved from Ohio to Los Angeles, as her father was a discjockey. Later, Vesta and her sisters appeared on the television show Jack and Jill as The Williams Sisters. Vesta went back to Ohio in 1977 and she joined her cousin's band in Dayton, but she soon returned to Los Angeles to launch a solo career. Although Vesta was physically small, she possessed one of urban contemporary and r&b's biggest and brassiest voices. For that reaseon, former Fifth Dimension member Ron Townsend put Williams in his band Wild Honey. Vesta also did sessions for, or toured with Chaka Khan, the Commodores, Jermaine Jackson, Ray Parker Jr., Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills and several others. Vesta Williams met producer David Crawford while she worked with his band Klique. Crawford took her demo-tapes to A&M Records and Vesta got a solo contract. In 1986, she scored a Billboard r&b top 10 hit with "Once bitten twice shy". During the 1990's, Vesta dropped the name 'Williams' from her performing name and all her recordings since then just bear the name Vesta.
