Sometimes it's a tourist trap like one of the Spanish resorts; sometimes we will bring you detailed information on some more exotic places. This week we will have a closer look at Senegal ![]() Senegal is one of the most interesting countries in West Africa. Many people know it as the birthplace of musician Youssou N'dour and Dakar, the country's capital, is amongst many travelers' favorite large African cities. In the capital's vicinity are several fine attractions. Île de Gorée is Africa's oldest slaving station. The island is a short boat ride from Dakar and very well geared towards tourism. N'Gor is another nice place near the capital, which is well worth a visit. Accommodation around the capital is expensive by Senegalese standards, but relatively cheap for Westerners. Other places in Senegal that should not be missed include Saint Louis, M'bour and the Delta du Saloum National Park. The Casamance in the south of the country should be avoided though, as rebels who are against President Abdoulaye Wade's government, have robbed travelers at gunpoint and killed several local guides. The best time to travel in Senegal is between November and March, when it's cool and dry, although around this same time of year dry, dusty harmattan winds can blow off the Sahara. The French ruled large parts of Senegal for centuries and as a result, French is widely spoken, while English is only understood by a very small percentage of the population. If you don't speak French, it might be wise to hire a local guide when getting around the country. Senegal is a very nice country to visit. Its nature and the people's culture are very interesting, while many coastal cities have good tourist facilities. ![]() Click on the images to learn more about this interesting destination. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1,103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions. But they said their dire conclusions may well come to pass if industrial nations do not curtail emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
