Fast food joints sell traditional noodles and a day of temple rituals can easily be followed by a visit to an amusement park. The country's capital of Taipei is a massive, bustling metropolis, but as soon as you're out of the city, you will find out why Taiwan is known as Ilha Formosa, 'the beautiful island'. Taiwan's countryside consists of wonderful mountain peaks, black volcanic rocks, waterfalls and a marvelous coastline. Taiwan's major political problem is the stalemate with China, which regards the island as a breakaway province and insists on its politics of 'one China'. Luckily the continuing tug-of-war between the People's Republic of China on the mainland and Taiwan has not exploded into a full out war and Taiwan has managed to agreeing to one China, but acting like an independent republic, but tensions run high at times. The best time to visit Taiwan is late August/early September, when it is Ghost Month. During that time there are no Chinese travelers on the road and the temples will be at their most active. October is climatically pleasant, but also ridden with busy holidays, during which transportation is overcrowded, most shops and restaurants are closed and hotels are unusually expensive. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions. But they said their dire conclusions may well come to pass if industrial nations do not curtail emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
