Gheos Worldguide Travel News Ghana On 30 June, it was reported that some 24 people have died in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire because of flooding and landslides. It has been raining in the region since Saturday and more rain is forecast. Most of the victims fell in the Ghanian capital of Accra. Learn more about:Ghana Venezuela A devastating earthquake hit Venezuela on 25 June. The quake hit with a force of 7.2, immediately followed by another one measuring 7.5. The quakes are amongst the strongest ones in the country's recent history and a massive death toll is feared. At least 45,000 people were reported as missing. The last time, Venezuela was hit by a strong earthquake, was in 2018, when a quake measured 7.3. Learn more about:Venezuela Europe Extreme heat has hit numerous European countries. In France, temperatures of up to 42°C were measured opn 25 June. Spain is also suffering from very hot temperatures. In the United Kingdom, temperature records for June were broken. Several other European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, also suffered from the heatwave. Europe was also hit by a record-breaking heatwave in May. Scientists blame global warming for these extreme heatwaves. Learn more about:Europe Philippines An earthquake with a force of 7.8 has hit the south of the Philippines on 7 June. Especially the southern island of Mindanao was hit hard. Numerous buildings collapsed and at least 12 people lost their lives. Learn more about:Philippines South Africa Heavy rain in the south of the country has caused flooding on 4 June. The same area has sufffered from severe rain and flooding since the beginning of May. Several roads have been closed and more rain is expected in the coming days. Learn more about:South Africa China An earthquake struck the region of Guangxi in the south of China on 18 May. At least 13 buildings have collapsed, resulting in 2 fatalities. One person is still not accounted for. Some 7,000 people from the city of Liuzhou were evacuated. This week we will have a closer look at Malawi   Malawi is often billed as 'the warm heart of Africa' and that is not far from the truth. The country's scenery is varied and gorgeous, while the people are very friendly toward travelers. Malawi is particularly famous for its orchids: more than 400 species have been recorded. Malawi has numerous national parks and game reserves, as well as mountainous areas where hiking and trekking is possible. Malawi's parks boast many large animals, but they are not the vast herds that one can sometimes see in other countries in the region. Malawi is a compact country with a reasonably developed transportation network and it is quite easy to get around. Accommodation is relatively easy found. Some of the most interesting sights include the capital of Lilongwe, Blantyre, Malawi's main highland areas of the Nyika and Viphya Plateaux and Lake Malawi, which straddles the country along most of its eastern side. In the Lake live more the 500 animal species; more than any other inland body of water in the world. Lake Malawi is excellent for diving, boating or swimming. The best time to visit the country is during the dry season, from May to October/November. In October temperatures average 32°C (90°F), while July is the coolest month, with daily highs around 21°C (70°F). From mid-October to the end of April is the wet season. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions.
