Sometimes it's a tourist trap like one of the Spanish resorts; sometimes we will bring you detailed information on some more exotic places. This week we will have a closer look at China![]() China is a huge country, where you will find modern metropolises, endless grasslands, deserts, sacred peaks, marvelous caves and countless imperial ruins. It would take several years to explore the country entirely, but even with limited time, it is possible to visit the most interesting places, including the route from Beijing to Tibet via Xi'an's terracotta warriors, which follows the old Silk Road route. You can also sail down the Yangzi River, or explore the landscapes of Guangxi Province. Weatherwise, spring (March-April) and autumn (September-October) are the best times to visit China. During these periods, daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F-86°F), but nights can be bitterly cold and it can be wet and miserable. Major public holidays, such as Chinese New Year, are best avoided as it's difficult to get around and find accommodation. Generally, eastern China is much more expensive than the western part of the country. Some of the most interesting places to visit are Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Xi'an, Macau, Nanjing, Tai Shan, Turpan, the Karakoram Highway and the Longgong Caves. The famous Chinese Wall can only be visited at several places. It is now forbidden to access the wall at places where it has not been restored. China is a great country for cycling. ![]() Click on the images to learn more about this interesting destination. A map of China will open full-screen. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions. But they said their dire conclusions may well come to pass if industrial nations do not curtail emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. |
