Gheos Worldguide Travel News Algeria Forest fires have claimed the lives of 12 people in northern Algeria, it was reported on 27 August. The country's national rescue service has counted 154 fires in the forested region. Numerous buildings were destroyed by the fires and several motorways have been closed to all traffic. Learn more about:Algeria Nepal On 26 August, a flash flood, caused by an avalanche has struck the region of Rasuwa in the north of Nepal. There are hundreds of victims and infrastructure in the region has been obliterated. About 300 foreign tourists are among the victims and are still missing. Learn more about:Nepal Belgium A nature fire in the east of Belgium has destroyed some 2,700 ha (10 sq mi) of forest on 15 August, making it the largest nature fire in the country's history. 600 people were evacuated and more people are preparing to leave their houses. Learn more about:Belgium Germany On 15 August, it was reported that a forest fire in western Germany is now under control. Some 2,000 people who had been evacuated have returned to their homes. Learn more about:Germany Italy The airport of the Italian city of Catania has reopened, after if had been closed, because of ash from the Etna volcano. The volcano has been spewing ash and lava since early July, but the amount of ash increased in mid-August. Learn more about:Italy Indonesia An earthquake measuring 7.7 hit the Indonesian island of Flores on 15 August. Countless buildings were destroyed and at least 38 people were killed, but it is feared that more victims are buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The quake's epicenter was located 68 km (42 mi) off the coast from the city of Ende on the island's southern coast. Learn more about:Indonesia Japan In the east of Japan, heavy rainfall on 14 August has prompted the evacuation of more than 100,000 people. A warning for landslides has been issued. In parts of the Chiba prefecture streets are flooded and thousands were left without electricity. Learn more about:Japan Europe A solar eclipse occurred in Greenland, Iceland and Spain on 12 August. The eclipse was first visible at sunrise in the northernmost part of Siberia. It was then visible in northern Greenland around 17:18 in the afternoon. The eclipse could be seen in western Iceland around 17:45. At 19:30 it was visible in northern Portugal and it was finally visible in large parts of northern and eastern Spain around 20:30. In most of the rest of Europe, Canada and northwestern Africa, a partial eclipse was visible. Latvia is bordered by Estonia in the north, Russia in the east, Belarus in the southeast and Lithuania in the south. Latvia's capital of Riga is the Baltics' most vibrant city. It lies in the center of the country, on the Rigas Juras, the Gulf of Riga. The city is a popular destibnation for cruise ships from Germany, Sweden and Finland and the nearby coastal resort of Jurmala receives thousands of visitors too. Other places of interest in Latvia include the Sigulda castles that overlook the Gauja river valley and the town of Rundale, where you can see the Rastrelli palace. The best times of year to visit Latvia are spring and summer (April to September), when the weather is pleasant and there are plenty of folk and music festivals going on. Most tourists visit in July or August and during these months, hotels are often fully booked and prices rise. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions.
