Hội An is an important port on the Cai River and is also known as Faifo. During the 17th century Dutch, Portuguese and Japanese trading vessels visited the city frequently. Later the French added their bit and as a result Hôi An has a unique character; it is a mixture of various cultures. There are many picturesque streets in the center of town, as well as about 850 old buildings. They include merchants' homes, pagodas, public buildings and large areas filled with colonnaded French buildings.
Hội An boasts several interesting museums. including the Museum of History and Culture, which is housed in a former pagode; the Hoi An Folklore Museum; the Museum of Trade Ceramics; the Museum of Sa Huỳnh Culture and the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Hôi An. The city is on the Pacific coast, 595 km north of Ho Chi Minh City and 645 km southeast of Hanoi.
