Longyearbyen is the capital of Svalbard (Norway) and largest town on the island. The town used to be called Longyear City, after John Munro Longyear, who started a mining business there in 1906. In 1966 its name was 'Norwegianized' into its current form.

Mining is still condicted there, but tourism has also become a major earner. There are also countless researchers in Longyearbyen.

Accommodation is widely available and there are numerous restaurants in town.
