Masvingo is the nearest town to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. In colonial times it used to be called Fort Victoria. There is not a whole lot to see in Masvingo, but it is a good place to stay if you want to visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins.

The St. Francis of Assisi Church is a chapel, three km from Masvingo. It was built by Italian POW during WWII and holds the remains of prisoners who died in Zimbabwe during that war. The chapel was completed in 1946 and the murals were added later. Nearby you can visit The Kyle dam, which is home to many different animal species.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Masvingo, as well as a camping ground. The bus station and the railway station are both on the eastern side of town, not far from each other. Masvingo is 250 km south of Harare.
