The Ala-Archa Canyon is a rugged gorge, some 40 km (25 miles) south of Bishkek. It is a nature park, which is excellent for hiking. You can visit glaciers and ski on them all year round, though the lifts only operate between December and April. The Upper Ala-Archa Mountain Ski Base is a good place to start skiing from. If you're more experienced you can climb the Kirgizskiy Mountains' highest peak. Shelters are scattered all over the park, but you can also bring your own tent to sleep.
Trips to the Ala-Archa Canyon can be arranged in Bishkek, but you can also get there by public transportation or using your own car. You will have to pay a fee when entering the park.
