Ascona

Switzerland's Ticino canton has a Mediterranean climate because of its low altitude. The whole canton has a distinctive Italian atmosphere. The town of Ascona lies on the northern tip of Lago Maggiore (Lake Major) in southern Switzerland. It is an important cultural center and there are numerous art galleries and craft shops in town. At the beginning of the 20th century, many artists and intellectuals moved to Ascona. One of the town's most famous inhabitants was the exiled Lenin. In the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna you can see works of local artists, such as Paul Klee, Hans Arp, Ben Nicholson and Alexej Jawlensky.
