Assisi
Assisi is a beautiful, walled city on the slopes of Mount Subasio. Assisi is dominated by the Rocca Maggiore, a 14th-century fortress, perched up the hillside, that provides fantastic views over the surrounding area.
In 1182 Saint Francis was born in Assisi. He died in 1228 and two years later construction of the San Francis Basislica began. There are beautiful frescos inside. Other churches in Assisi include Santa Maria Maggiore, San Pietro, Santa Clare and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. In Assisi you will also find an excavated Roman forum and the ruins of the Temple of Minerva.
There are many hotels and restaurants in town. Assisi is 130 km north of Rome.
