Black Hills National Forest

Black Hills National Forest is one of South Dakota's natural treasures. The park offers splendid opportunities for hiking, biking and camping. The region's most important attraction is the Crazy Horse Memorial, a huge statue of Crazy Horse, the Sioux leader who was famous for orchestrating the demise of General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The statue was carved out of the mountainside in the foothills of southwestern South Dakota. Construction of the memorial started in 1948 and work is still in progress. There's a museum at the site, which is just north of the town of Custer.

Black Hills National Forest is about 2250 km northwest of Washington D.C.
