The fertile Bolaven Plateau is home to the Laven tribes-people, who grow some of the best coffee in the world, as well as fruit, cardamom and rattan. The plateau is the center of the Mon-Khmer culture and there are numerous Alak, Katu, Ta-oy and Suay villages in the region. Alak and Katu people live in small communities in circles of thatched houses. One of their most colorful ceremonies is the annual sacrifice of buffalo. Alak, Katu and Lawae women traditionally have tattoos on their faces, but the younger generation doesn't embrace this custom.
The Bolaven Plateau boasts some scenic waterfalls as well. At the bottom of the Taat Lo waterfall is a large pool, which is excellent for swimming.
