Cirque de Mafate is the best place to visit if you want to see original rural villages in Réunion. Mafate is surrounded by ramparts and there are numerous gullies and narrow ridges. There are no roads in Mafate, so the only way to go there is on foot and will take you at least two days (one to get in and one to get out). Entry is from various places, including Salazie, Cilaos and Le Port.

The landscape is magnificent and water is available from springs scatterd throughout the area. Accommodation is available in the form of gîtes (huts) close to the trails. A cirque is a large volcanic cul-de-sac valley, surrounded by high mountains.
