The archaeological site at Copán includes some of the most striking Maya ruins in Honduras. It is open daily and some of the most interesting ruins include the Stelae of the Great Plaza, which portrays the rulers of Copán, dating from 613; the ball court and its hieroglyphic stairway and the Acropolis, where you can see marvelous reliefs that were carved to portray the 16 kings of Copán.
The best place to stay if you want to visit the ruins, is nearby Copán. It is a beautiful village with picturesque buildings and cobbled streets. There is a lovely colonial church in the center of town.
Another nice church is in Santa Rita de Copán, which is also in the vicinity of the ruins. Some hot springs can be found at an hours drive from Copán.
Copán is in the west of Honduras, close to the border with Guatemala, 225 km west of Tegucigalpa.
