Gangtok

Gangtok is the capital of the Indian Sikkim state. There are magnificent views over the Kanchenjunga Mountains from Gangtok. The principal place of worship for the town's Buddhists is the Tsuk-La-Khang (Royal Chapel). Inside are pictures of Buddha, as well as woodcarvings and scriptures. It is closed to non-Buddhists, except during the celebration of the Tibetan New Year, when the so-called Black Hat dance is performed. This dance symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

In the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology the world's largest collection of books and manuscripts on Mahayana Buddhism is kept, as well as thankas (cloth paintings) and other art. More than 400 species of orchid can be seen at the orchid sanctuary that surrounds the compound.

Interesting monasteries include the ones at Rumtek and Phodang, not far from Gangtok. Treks through the mountains can be arranged in town; a guide is compulsory. Accommodation is available in Gangtok and so are restaurants. Gangtok is 1120 km east of Delhi, on the western side of the ridge flanking the Ranipool River.
