The U.S. Steel Corporation founded Gary. The company purchased the land in 1905 and landscaped it for a city. Three years later, the first blast furnace was lit. it was the start of a vast lakefront steel complex, which later became one of the world's greatest steel centers that dominated U.S. steel production. In 1919 federal troops occupied the city for several months after a nationwide steel strike, during which the Gary steelworkers were especially active in organizing meetings and planning actions.
