In German times Gdansk was known as Danzig. The old Hanze city was founded in the 10th century and its heyday came several centuries later when fortunes were made with trade. Nowadays it's an industrial city and important harbor. There are numerous beautiful buildings in Gdansk. The city was also the cradle of Solidarity, the union, led by Lech Walesa that was one of the catalyzes of the collapse of communism in the 1980's.

The city lies in the north of Poland, on the Baltic Sea, 280 km northwest of Warsaw. There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Gdansk.
