The town of Hibbing is in northeastern Minnesota, on the Mesabi iron range, some 145 km (90 miles) from the Canadian border. Originally, Hibbing was 3.2 km (2 miles) north from the present location, but in 1917, the town was moved to make room for one of the world's largest open-pit iron mines.
Iron mining became the region's major industry, but it has declined. Paper and metal products, electronic and mining equipment, chemicals, candy, storage tanks and explosives are manufactured in Hibbing nowadays. Agriculture (poultry, alfalfa, oats, dairy cattle), timber and tourism add to the economic base. A dense forest region rich with wildlife is not fare from town and hunting and camping are popular activities.
Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Hibbing is 280 km north from Saint Paul and 1590 km northwest from Washington D.C.
