The main four granite peaks of the Hua Shan rise some 2200 m high above the surrounding plain and form one of China's sacred mountain areas. You can walk all the way to the top along a 15 km long path that features countless steps hewn out of the rocks. One hair-raising section of the path is called Green Dragon Ridge. The path has been cut along a narrow rock ridge there, with sheer cliffs on both sides.
The main peaks of the Hua Shan are connected by a trail and in the area are numerous mountain hotels where you can find a room and food. Several kilometers north of the mountains is the villages of Huashan, which has rail and road connections with Xi'an, 120 km to the west. Huashan is 830 km southwest of Beijing.
