The arid Hunter Valley is the largest wine-growing region in New South Wales. There are more than 60 vineyards in the Lower Hunter, most of which are concentrated around Pokolbin. Many of the wineries can be visited for tasting and cellar sales.
The Hunter Valley is wide and scenic and lies about two hours drive north of Sydney. Accommodation is available in the nearby town of Cessnock.
Other interesting places in the Hunter Valley include Myall Lakes National Park and the popular resort of Port Stephens. Newcastle is a lovely city that boasts some marvelous beaches.
The Hunter Valley is an easy 110 km (68 miles) drive from Sydney. It has excellent rail and bus connections as well.
