La Habana (Havana) is the largest city in the Caribbean and although it lies in a country with a turbulent history, were wars and revolutions have left their traces, it has hardly suffered any damages whatsoever. All main events in Cuba happen (or are decided) in the city. Havana is the country's cultural, economical and political center. The little traffic in the city consists mainly of public transport and some 50s and 60s American automobiles. Most buildings are deteriorating as maintenance is nonexistant. The only buildings that are being restorated are the glorious Spanish colonial architecture. There is a lot to do in the night-time in Havana, as the city is filled with cinemas, historic theatres, cabarets, nightclubs, music venues and other dance-bars that will keep you going for a while.
The most beautiful of the 15 municipalities in which Havana is devided, is La Habana Vieja (Old Havana), which is filled with colonial architecture. The best places to look for cheap accommodation, food and night-clubs are Vedado and Centro Habana. There are also many people who rent their own appartment or rooms in their house.
