Balaton is one of the largest lakes in Europe and covers an area of nearly 600 km². The lake's southern shore forms essentially one long resort and is lined with a string of hotels and beaches. On the northern shore you'll find more historical towns, vineyards and mountainous areas and less hotels, although building activities will soon transform the lake's entire shore into one huge resort.
The largest town on Lake Balaton is Siófok on the southern shore. Other interesting places on the lake's shores include Keszthely and Balatonfüred.
The eastern tip of Lake Balaton is about 90 km southwest of Budapest, while the western tip is 70 km further.
