La Palma is often referred to as the 'Beautiful Island', or the 'Green Island'. It features the world's largest volcanic crater, La Caldera del Taburiente. It has a diameter of 9 kilometers and a depth of 770 meters. The viewpoint of Mirador de la Cumbrecita on its rim provides excellent views over the crater. La Palma's highest mountain is Roque de los Muchachos, which rises some 2423 m above sea level. As a result, La Palma has the world's greatest elevation compared to the diameter.
There are many interesting sights on La Palma. The island's capital of Santa Cruz is small, but interesting. South of Santa Cruz is Breña Baja, where you will find some very beautiful small bays and great beaches of sand, such as Playa de Cancajos. In Mazo, close to the airport, is the Cueva de Belmaco, where you can see prehistoric engravings. There are also great views over the coast. In Fuencaliente you can enjoy the unusual contrast of vineyards and volcanic craters. The craters of San Antonio and Teneguía are the most popular ones. The latter has erupted as recent as 1971.
Puerto de Naos is a traditional fishing-village that boasts splendid beaches of fine sand. Tazacorte is surrounded by large plantations of bananas. It has a picturesque port and fine beaches too. The view-point of El Time sits in the beautiful valley of Los Lanos de Aridane and overlooks the National Park Caldera del Taburiente. Cueva Bonita, close to Tijarafe, is a beautiful grotto that is really worth a visit. Around the towns of San Andrés and Sauces are large and beautiful woods.
