Madaba is an easy-going town, which is bets known for its Byzantine-era mosaics, of which the 6th century mosaic map of Palestine, known as the 'Madaba map', is the most famous. The map is made of 2 million pieces and shows the Nile River, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The mosaic is situated inside the Greek Orthodox Saint George's Church.
Large parts of Madaba have been restored and are now protected as the city's Archaeological Park. Some of the most interesting sights in Madaba include the churches of the Virgin and the Prophet Elias, which were both built in the 7th century. The Hippolytus hall is older. It includes a beautiful mosaic depicting scenes from the tragedy of Phaedre and Hippolytus.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Madaba, but most people prefer to stay in Amman, 30 km to the north, which has better facilities. Buses connect the two places.
