Magnetic Island is only 8 km offshore from Townsville. It is one of the most popular reef islands for budget travelers in the Great Barrier Reef. Most of the island is a national park and there are great beaches, lots of wildlife, a koala sanctuary and excellent bush walk possibilities. People come to Magnetic Island throughout the year and its proximity to the Australian mainland makes it like a suburb of Townsville. Magnetic is also one of the larger islands in the region and its atmosphere is different from the purely resort islands. There are several small towns on Magnetic Island, including Arcadia, Picnic Bay, Horseshoe Bay and Nelly Bay.
Backpackers' accommodation is available in the towns and there are also hotels, resorts and holiday flats. The towns have many restaurants too. Picnic Bay has a high-speed catamaran connection with Townsville and the trip takes about 20 minutes. Some services continue to Arcadia. Transportation around Magnetic Island is by bus or taxi, or by hiring a bicycle, scooter or Moke.
