Marsabit is the main town in Marsabit National Reserve. The town lies inside the park in a hilly area of lush vegetation at the base of 1702 m high Mount Marsabit, some 425 km northeast of Nairobi. There are many extinct volcanoes in the region, some of which have a lake on the crater floor. The streets of Marsabit are a colorful mixture of peoples from various different tribes and ethnic groups. Most of them have nomadic lifestyles and only come to town to trade goods.
There are several lodges in town as well as hotels. Marsabit is connected to Isiolo in the south and Moyale in the north, by bus and matatu (minibus). All vehicles in the area travel in convoy to reduce the risk of being attacked by bandits (shiftas).
