Maseru is on Lesotho's northwestern border. The city has always been a quiet place with a slow pace, but since British Royals visited the country in 1947 and Kingsway was paved for the occasion, the pace has gone up a little. For most visitors though it remains a laid back town.
Kingsway is the capital's main street. It runs from the border post at the river to the Circle, a roundabout in the southeast of town. Apart from the lively market a few hundred meters northeast from the Circle on North Main Road, there is not much to see in Maseru, but it is Lesotho's economical, political and cultural center and a good place to base yourself when exploring the country. Trips to Sehlabathebe National Park as well as to the 'urban villages' around the capital, can be booked from Maseru. You can also visit nearby Thaba Bosiu, Moshoeshoe's mountain stronghold.
The railway station is in the northwest of the city, close to the border-river. The bus park is on the southeastern outskirts, on Main South Road. Maseru has a wide variety of hostels and hotels. There are also many restaurants, bars and clubs.
The mountain ridges around the city provide excellent terrain for hiking. The views from the mountains over Maseru are excellent.
There are several so-called 'urban villages' near the capital. In these villages many people still live in traditional ways, so they are a good place to visit if you want to learn more about that.
