Mejit is a small, but beautiful island of lush taro patches and an abundance of coconut, breadfruit and pandanus trees. The island lacks a protective lagoon and fishing, as well as the unloading of boats can be perilous, especially in November and December, when it is generally windier. Mejit has a small freshwater lake, a feature that is unusual in the Marshalls. You can swim there, but it is full of algae and not very nice.
Much better swimming is at California Beach on the northwest side of the island. Another popular activity on Mejit is fishing. The waters around the island teams with fish, none of which is poisonous. If you want to bring a nice souvenir from Mejit, you should buy a pandanus-leaf mat. The mats are hand-woven by the Mejit women and unique in the Marshalls.
Mejit Island measures only about 1 square mile. It is home to a small population. Nearly all of the people on Mejit speak English. Some accommodation is available on the island. Mejit is 355 km north of Majuro.
