The Meroe Ruins are on the east bank of the Nile, 50 km northeast of Shandi. The ruins are remnants of the Meroitic era (350 BC to 350 AD) and they include pyramids, temples and palaces. In the early years of the Kingdom it was influenced by Egyptian art and religion, but later it became isolated and it developed its own script and art, which is refected in the ruins.

After several attacks by other tribes, the city was finally destroyed by the Christian kingdom of Axum (Ethiopia). The ruins of the Amon Temple are between the Nile and the railroad line. About 1 km east of Meroe is the Temple of the Sun. The pyramids are some 5 km (3 miles) from town and can be reached by taxi.

Accommodation is available in Meroe and so are restaurants. The nearest train station is at Kabushiya. Meroe is 200 km north of Khartoum.

Because of the current situation in Sudan it is not recommended to travel to Meroe, or any other destination in Sudan at this moment.
