Mokhotlong

Mokhotlong is 160 km east of Maseru. It is the first town of any size you get to when traveling northwards over the Sani Pass. It is said that Mokhotlong is the most remote place in the country, but other stories say it is the driest or coldest place. Mokhotlong means 'Place of the Bald Ibis', but those birds are never seen there. The town is an excellent place to stay if you want to hike to the Drakensberg escarpment.

There are some shops in town as well as accommodation, but to get there you'll need your own means of transportation. The only public transport serves the town from Butha Buthe.
