Moncton was called The Bend until 1833, when it was renamed in honor of the British general Robert Monckton. Although its rail repair yards were closed in 1988, the city is an important air and rail transportation center. In the 1990's, its bilingual citizenry enabled Moncton to become a telemarketing and telephone customer-service center. Textiles, wood, metal, meat and petroleum products are manufactured in Moncton, while wood and meat are processed there.

Moncton is best known for Magnetic Hill, which is an optical illusion and the Tidal Bore, a high tide occurring twice daily. The Université de Moncton is based in Moncton. The university was founded in 1963.

Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Moncton is on the Petitcodiac River in the southeast of New Brunswick. It is 150 km east from Fredericton and 860 km northeast from Ottawa.
