Nyahururu (Thomson's Falls)

Nyahururu lies some 2360 m above sea level, making it one of the highest towns in Kenya. As a result the climate is cool and refreshing. The town was established in the colonial era. The town is also known as Thomson's Falls, but most people refer to it as 'T Falls'.

The Thomson's Falls are on the outskirts of Nyahururu, where the Ewaso Narok River plunges 72 m down into a ravine. You can climb down to the bottom of the ravine. The falls were named after Joseph Thomson. He was the first 'white man' to hike from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the beginning of the 1880's.

There are various lodges and hotels in Nyahururu, including the Thomson's Falls Lodge that overlooks the falls. Restaurants and bars are also widely available. You can get to Nyahururu by bus or matatu (minibus) from Nakuru, Nyeri or Maralal. Nyahururu is 160 km north of Nairobi.
