Oaxaca

Oaxaca was founded by the Spanish and boasts numerous narrow streets, lined with colonial buildings. It is situated in the rugged southern state of Oaxaca, where large parts of Mexico's indigenous population live. There are several interesting Indian markets and local handicrafts centers in Oaxaca, as well as a host of small bars and cafés.

Oaxaca is a good place to stay if you want to visit the ruins at Monte Albán, Mitla, Yagul and Cuilapan, which are all within reasonable distance of the city and can be visited on day trips. There are also several interesting villages in the vicinity. Accommodation is available in town. Oaxaca is 365 km southeast of Mexico City.
