Pago Pago is the somewhat industrial, but quite pleasant capital of American Samoa. It consists of several different parts and it is dominated by Mount Alava, which provides excellent views over the entire island from its summit. You can walk to the summit along a 5 km (3 miles) long trail. Some steep mountains that plunge straight into the sea are located around Pago Pago's picturesque, but polluted harbor.

If you want to learn more about American Samoa's history, you should visit the Jean P Haydon Museum, where numerous ancient artifacts are on display. It houses a fascinating native pharmacopoeia as well.

There are several restaurants and hotels in Pago Pago, including the infamous Rainmaker Hotel. Pago Pago is on the island of Tutuila.
