Pante Makasar (Pantemakassar or Oecussi Town)

Pante Makasar, or Pantemakassar, is more commonly known as Oecussi Town. It was the first permanent Portuguese settlement in Timor and it is historically of great significance to the country. The town itself is laid-back and offers some nice beaches. The reefs, only several meters off the coast are excellent for snorkeling.

About 1.5 km south of town is the old hilltop fort of Fatusuba. The fort was one of the few buildings that were not destroyed in 1999 and it offers great views over the area. There is a shrine and several religious festivals are celebrated there each year.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Pante Makasar. The town is 155 km west of Dili.
