Pathein (Bassein)

Pathein (formerly known as Bassein) is one of Myanmar's premier port cities. The city is known for its handicrafts, such as pottery and hand-painted umbrellas. Pathein's major sight is the Shwemokhtaw Pagoda that was constructed for a Muslim princess, by her three lovers. During the period of full moon in May, a festival is held there every year.

There are many hotels and restaurants in Pathein. The city lies in the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) delta, some 150 km west of Yangon (Rangoon) and is connected to the Bay of Bengal by the Twante Canal delta waterways. The journey between Pathein and Yangon by ferry takes you through the delta area and is well worth the experience.
