Port Lavaca is on Lavaca Bay in southern Texas. It is a deepwater port of entry to the United States, as well as an important shipping point for an agricultural (grains, cattle, cotton) area. There are numerous shrimp, oyster and fishing industries, including related processing. Tourism is significant and nearby gas and oil wells add to the economy too. Aluminum, plastic, cement and fertilizer are manufactured in the city. A state park and Matagorda Air Force Base are not far from town.

Port Lavaca has many hotels and restaurants. It is 465 km south from Dallas and 2150 km southwest from Washington D.C.
