The island of Providenciales is often referred to as 'Provo'. It has long been a laid-back place, where development used to be nonexistent. The first wheeled vehicle arrived in 1964 and the first resort was constructed in 1990. Despite of that, Providenciales is now the most developed island for tourism in the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are many resort hotels, an 18-hole golf course and the island has a good road network. Along Sapodilla Bay are many luxurious villas that are popular with retirees. The coral reefs that surround Providenciales Island are excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling.
On the northeastern tip of Providenciales Island is the Caicos Conch Farm & Inland Sea Center, where you can learn everything about growing conchs.
There are many hotels, resorts and restaurants on the island. 'Provo' is 110 km northwest of Cockburn Town.
