Puntarenas

The sea at Puntarenas is so polluted that it is unwise to go swimming there, unless you are a local and your immune system has adapted to the water. Just off the coast from the city are several isolated islands, such as Isla Tortuga, where the water quality is much better. Surfers should head for Boca Barranca and Doña Ana, where the surf is good.

There are many hotels and restaurants in Puntarenas. The city is 85 km west of San José.
