Qinghai Province

The Qinghai province is separated from Tibet by the lines on the map only. Geographically, culturally and ethnologically the two regions are no different. Qinghai has been the region where criminals and political prisoners have been sent to since 1949. The original inhabitants of the province include minorities like Kazaks, Mongols, Hui and Tibetans.

The province's capital of Xining is of little interest, but not far from the city are the interesting Ta'er Monastery and Qinghai Hu, the largest lake in China. The city of Golmud serves mainly as a transportation hub for people traveling through the region.
