The vast majority of visitors come to the Maldives on package tours and stay on one of the 75 islands that host resorts, notably North Malé Atoll, South Malé Atoll and Ari Atoll. The resorts all promise beautiful white sand beaches, blue sea for marvelous diving and lush palm trees, but comfort, cuisine, clientele, character and their suitability for various excursions and activities differ from resort to resort, so if you are not on a package holiday it might be good to shop around.
None of the resorts in the Maldives are really bad and they are all quite expensive. The quality is usually related to the price. Some resorts have modern rooms, while others have thatched roofs and sand floors. The larger resorts attract younger people, while the smaller ones are cozier, which usually appeals more to couples and honeymooners. In some of the resorts you will find people from certain nationalities only, while other welcome a more diversified clientele. Scuba diving is good in most resorts, though from some places access to the dive sites is better than from others. The same can be said for excursions to local Maldivian villages and the capital of Malé.
