Ruhengeri is a good place to stay if you want to visit the Parc National des Volcans. There is nothing of interest to travelers in Ruhengeri, but there are excellent views of the volcanoes in the north and west, including Rwanda's highest mountain, the 4519 m high volcano of Karisimbi.
Many parts of the surrounding hills are not accessible as they are military areas. There are only a few hotels and restaurants in town. Bicycles can be rented in Ruhengeri to explore the area. Transportation to the Parc National des Volcans and most major towns in Rwanda is available from the town center, not far from the market. Ruhengeri is in the northwest of Rwanda, 70 km northwest of Kigali. THe town has connections with Uganda.
